As we watched this past year unfold, we saw folks expressing a great desire to connect with others and the earth and to work for the common good. For 44 years our Starcross Community has actively endeavored to do just those things.
September marks not only the beginning of another busy summer at Starcross, but also the ending of our annual fund drive. Your donation today is more important than ever as we seek to sustain our daily work and to plan for the future of Starcross.
We are happy to share our home, our garden, our land, and our spiritual strength. As a nonprofit, we can't do it without the support of wonderful folks like YOU!
Dear Friends,
Almost fifty years ago, three naive yet determined and big-hearted people moved to the country. Marti Aggeler, Julie DeRossi and Toby McCarroll had no money but they did have tremendous enthusiasm, energy, and a compelling dream — to live a simple spiritual life in harmony with nature while doing good in the world. Thus Starcross Monastic Community was born. Our beloved Sister Marti passed away in 2016, but her gentle influence endures.
Starcross is best known for our work with children orphaned or ill with AIDS. Starcross Kin Worldwide provided a loving home for several hundred youngsters in Romania, Uganda, and here at Starcross. Thankfully, new medical treatments have decreased the need for such work. For an update of our current programs, please read the latest issue of our newsletter, Starcross Sharings.
The purpose of this letter is to describe our financial situation, starting with a bit of relevant history.
Many people do not realize that Starcross does not receive any type of public funding or institutional/foundation grants. Neither Brother Toby nor Sister Marti nor I have ever taken a salary. From the beginning, we endeavored to support ourselves “by the work of our own hands.”
One year after establishing Starcross, we started hand-crafting and selling wreaths made from fir trees on our property. The holiday wreaths became very popular. When demand surpassed our capacity, we started having them custom made to our specifications. A volunteer team helps us pack the wreaths here in our barn and ship them out each December. Seeking additional means of self-support, we taught ourselves to farm organically, raise olive trees, and make artisan olive oil. “Sister Julie’s Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil” has won eight Gold Medals and two Best of Class awards at competitions!
We are proud to report that the sale of wreaths, olive oil, and Brother Toby’s books now covers 50% of our operating costs. Yet even with our conscientious frugality and labor-intensive self-support endeavors, we cannot sustain Starcross solely through our own personal efforts. We must depend on contributions from friends and supporters. Once a year, we reach out to ask for your financial support.
With this very brief summary of our nearly fifty years, and with the information contained in our enclosed newsletter, it is my sincere hope that you will better understand how very important your contribution is to Starcross. Your donation will be deeply appreciated and will make a truly meaningful impact. Thank you for considering our request.
Please call me personally to explore other ways to make a financial contribution, such as including a legacy bequest to Starcross in your will.
It is our firm intention that Starcross will continue to be a sanctuary of peace, offer spiritual encouragement, respond to new challenges, and be faithful stewards of the land for many years to come.
We thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.
Peace and blessings,
Sister Julie DeRossi
